Welcome to VCast, the podcast where we interview travelers and share travel tips. Our focus today will be in the region Zagreb-Losinj.

We did a 4-day trip, with sightseeing happening mainly in days 2 and 3. The easiest place for us to rent a car was Zagreb, so we flew there and rented through Ok Mobility. At first we got a bit unsure due to the reviews made on Google Maps about the company, so we considered changing for Sixt, another rental company available at Zagreb's airport. However the rental went fine, they offered two insurance options, one requiring a deposit and another 10% of the price but in which you paid the amount to the company and get full insurance + additional driver and the opportunity of crossing the borders with the car.

From there we drove to Rijeka, where we stayed at Preelook Rooms & Apartments. It is basically a bed and breakfast, so I would recommend in case you are planning to travel during the whole day as we did. Breakfast was from 8-10am. The first day was our traveling from the airport day, so we did not get more done except for that.

The second day we drove to Hum. Hum is the smallest city in the world and, in 2022 had only 28 inhabitants. It is an old town on a hilltop. Most of the staff there spoke English and some other languages (as far as I remember Italian and German), but the restaurant staff had very low English command. For the rest of the trip, I would say that very few people spoke fluent English and restaurant staff usually did not speak it.

We went to the town's church and cemetery, visited the museum and walked around the tiny old town. The museum had its shop integrated to it, where in most rooms you could acquire items. I had the impression that upselling was something common in Croatia (that's my personal impression and I don't mean to offend anyone from the region). However for people from cultures where upselling is not common, I would recommend to be prepared for it.

Included in the museum ticket, is a tasting at the store from the same owners. They have jams, cheese, chocolate, hams and salami tasting. There are some other souvenir stores in the city.

The restaurant had a menu including a lot of Italian and German dishes. Be aware that the dishes are well served. We had pasta and sausages with sauerkraut. What ended up being way more than we could possibly eat. Therefore we requested to take away the excedent. That seemed to not be something they are used to.

From Hum we went to Pula, where we visited a Roman Amphitheater. The Arena has kept a lot of it's elements. In the underground there is an exhibition of wine and olive oil culture in the region. The exhibition was quite small, but it was interesting to visit.

That was enough for that day, so we headed back to the hotel to be ready for the next day, which would include a longer driving time.

On the third day of the trip, we went to LoÅ¡inj. They were having a food festival involving many restaurants. We went to Restaurant Diana and ordered the festival menu of meat. There was a mistake in our order, so one of us got the fish menu instead of the meat menu. The menus in all restaurants had a standard price.

The menu was:

Fish menu

  • Cow’s milk curd cream with potato croquettes and marinated LoÅ¡inj asparagus
  • Cuttlefish brodetto with polenta
  • Lemon crostata with a strawberry coulis and whipped cream

Meat menu

  • Cow’s milk curd cream with potato croquettes and marinated LoÅ¡inj asparagus
  • Veal fillet with sautéed baby potatoes on a red bean cream
  • Lemon crostata with a strawberry coulis and whipped cream

The city of Losinj has many events throughout the year, which can be checked here. After the meal, we walked in Veil Lošinj. We walked through it's tight streets with rock walls and went all te way to Molo Rovenska, a kind of a pier.

That was our last sightseeing day. The last day of the trip was focused on traveling back to Zagreb and finding a church. As I have shared here before, it is always nice to enjoy time with believers around the world. The message today at the church we attended in Zagreb was on Acts 10:34-48 and focused on the fact that we, as believers, are one body in Christ and there is no partiality or division because of our ethnicity. The pastor also shared the message of the Gospel (that Jesus died on the cross for our sins, so we would not be punished by our mistakes, but through faith in Jesus for forgiveness of our sins as our Lord and Savior, we could obtain eternal life).

If you also would like to find a church when travelling, I would recommend looking out for an international church and checking their statement of faith to check for alignment on what they believe with regards to the Bible.

That was a summary of our trip, we went then back to the airport, returned the car and flew back home. Have you ever been to Croatia? Do you have any recommendation of places to visit?

Safe trips and see you next time!
